Bitcoin ATM’s and Ireland have had a mixed history. A couple of years ago a couple of individual groups had tried to establish locations for ATMs in properties in Dublin City, but with a mixed history. GSM Solutions had hosted bitcoin atm’s for a long time in its premises on Lower Abbey Street, but when the business shut down, so did it’s ATM. Likewise with the ATM formerly hosted at Busyfeet & Coco in South William Street, which was there for a year and then was abruptly removed.
For more than two years, there wasn’t a single bitcoin ATM available in the country. However, over 2019, a new company has been establishing a network of bitcoin and ethereum ATM’s across Ireland. Cork based Boinnex has set out to re-establish crypto atm’s in the country, and has actually began to create one. The network is now five strong, with ATM’s now available in Dublin’s northside, southside, Cabra, Swords and Cork.
I recently traveled to San Francisco for San Francisco Blockchain Week and was impressed with the spread of crypto ATM’s over there. Nearly half of the convenience stores and petrol stations I randomly visited had bitcoin ATM’s in them, showing how far Ireland is behind. Are we close to having a situation like this in Ireland? Unlikely in the short term, but if Boinnex can build its network around population concentrations and get enough volume to continue growing, then it’ll prove consumer interest for cryptocurrencies and possibly prompt additional companies to expand into Ireland.

We get asked all the time the handiest ways to buy crypto. Don’t want to wait? Buy crypto with your credit/debit card with CEX, get major crypto’s with very low fees at Coinmate (which supports topup by Revolut) or get a full range of altcoins and cryptos with Binance. A little more expensive but simpler and more convenient if you want a mobile is Coinbase.
